Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup (200g) long-grain white rice
- 1 ½ cups (360ml) beef broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
- ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup (100g) shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions:
In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10–15 minutes, until they’re golden brown and caramelized. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant. - Cook the Rice:
Stir the uncooked rice into the caramelized onions, coating it in the buttery mixture. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 15–18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed. - Add the Cheese:
Once the rice is fully cooked, sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese on top. Cover the skillet for 2–3 minutes to allow the cheese to melt. - Serve:
Fluff the rice gently with a fork, ensuring the cheese is evenly mixed. Garnish with additional thyme, if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
- For a deeper flavor, you can use caramelized onion soup mix in place of fresh onions.
- If Gruyère is unavailable, try mozzarella or cheddar for a different twist.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
